Chondrocladia lampadiglobus is a carnivorous horned silica sponge from the genus Chondrocladia . It was first described by Jean Vacelet in 2006and named by him because of its resemblance to a "street lamp with glass balls" from Latin lampas , lampadis (German: lamp ) and Latin globus (German: sphere ).
features
Chondrocladia lampadiglobus is anchored by a rhizoid in the sediment of the sea floor. It is 50 cm long with the stem making up about half the size. This connects the 6 cm long with rhizoid the cylindrically shaped body from which radially 10-20 streamer out. These are a maximum of 5 cm long, 2-4 mm in diameter and each have a transparent, spherical structure at their end that carries spermatophores .
The entire surface of the sponge is covered with elongated sclerites , which are most often found on the body and less on the stem. They consist of a curved shaft with six sharp wings each and a notch at the end.
nutrition
The sclerites serve the sponge to catch small crustaceans , whereby this carnivore behavior is a characteristic of the genus Chondrocladia .
distribution and habitat
Chondrocladia lampadiglobus has been sighted in the eastern Pacific , mainly in the eastern Indo-Pacific , in the area of the East Pacific Ridge , Easter Island and on the Chilean coast. In these areas the sponge lives preferentially on volcanic surfaces at a depth of 2600 to 3000 meters , for example on pillow lava , but stays away from the species-rich volcanically active zones.
Systematics
C. lampadiglobus belongs to the genus Chondrocladia and is mainly similar to C. concrescens ( Schmidt , 1880), from which it only differs in the form of sclerites and its distribution ( North Atlantic , Gulf of Mexico ).
