Chong Hyon-jong (born December 17, 1939 in Seoul ) is a South Korean poet .

Life

Chong Hyon-jong was born in 1939. Like most of his generation, his life was very much shaped by the post-war period and the events of the democracy movement. From middle and high school he studied literature, music, ballet, philosophy and then studied philosophy at Yonsei University . In 1965 his first works, Solo Tanz und Lied des Sommers und des Winters appeared . A meeting with the literary critic Kim Hyŏn gave a decisive turning point to his works, which until then had focused on the painful death after life.

In his early 30s, Chong Hyon-jong began writing for a daily newspaper as a journalist. The volumes of poetry Dream of an Object (1972) and Festival of Pain (1974) date from this period . At the age of 38, Chong was appointed professor of creative writing at the Seoul Art College. He is currently Professor of Korean Literature at Yonsei University . Based on his feelings of guilt in connection with the Kwangju uprising , he wrote his collection of poems in 1984, Like a ball that jumps up again . He published his fourth volume of poetry in 1989 together with the collection of essays Entzückung des Leben . In the same year, the volume of poetry he translated, Twenty Love Poems and a Song of Despair by Pablo Neruda, was published . He received the Pablo Neruda Medal for his translation work.

In 1992, at the age of 53, he published his fifth volume of poetry, Eine Blume , seven years later thirst and source at the same time. The Festival of Pain was published in 2002 and Fly Bus, fly! .

Chong is one of the most representative poets of the so-called Han'gŭl generation, those writers who were not yet familiar with the use of their own language after the liberation from Japanese colonial rule and who first had to learn Korean systematically. His poems overcame the lyrical language styles and emotions common in the colonial era, thereby reforming Korean poetry.
