The Choral Synagogue is the synagogue in Samara in the Volga Federal District in Russia . It was built in 1908 by the architect Selman Kleinerman .

construction

The synagogue was built because of the growing Jewish population in Samara, after the two existing prayer houses were no longer sufficient. After the building application had been approved, construction of the building with 1000 spaces began in 1903.

Opening of the synagogue

On the front of the building there is a memorial plaque listing those who did their best to build the synagogue. These include the architect Selman Kleinerman, his assistant Rafail Margulis and the financial supporters of the building. Russian merchants and craftsmen also provided financial aid .

The opening of the synagogue was celebrated with a public holiday in the city. The magazine "Gorodskoj Westnik" reported that the opening took place with the participation of the city mayor , deputy governor , council members and the general public. After the solemn lighting of the Ner Tamid , champagne and breakfast were served.

During the Soviet era

In 1929 the synagogue was closed. The building was then a palace of culture and later a bread factory .

At the present time

The synagogue is currently being restored .
