Choroní is a village in the state of Aragua in Venezuela . It is best known for its fishing port Puerto Colombia and its beaches.

history

On the site of Choroni, a church was built by Brother Pedro Buitriago as early as 1616. As a colonial village, it was recognized by the Spanish in 1622 . In the beginning it was difficult to get to by land due to the lack of a road through the rainforest. Today this rainforest forms the Henri Pittier National Park , which was named after the Swiss scientist Henri Pittier .

In 1875 Madre Maria de San José was born here, a woman who stood up for the poor and founded an order in Maracay . She was beatified by John Paul II in 1995 .

The road to Choroní was built around 1920 and paved in the 1970s. Due to the long seclusion of the place, many buildings from the colonial times have been preserved.

economy

Especially in the 19th century, Choroni was known for the high quality cocoa grown there . Cocoa is still grown here today, but the most important industry is tourism. Every year Choroni and especially Puerto Colombia are visited by 20,000 to 30,000 tourists who appreciate the area for its beautiful sandy beaches. The largest sandy beach here is Playa Grande .
