Chris Kenner
Chris Kenner (born December 25, 1929 in New Orleans , Louisiana , † January 25, 1976 ) was an American songwriter and singer in the field of rhythm and blues (R&B).
Musical career
Kenner began his musical career as a songwriter in the 1950s and first gained regional popularity in New Orleans. In 1956 he began to sing about records himself, one of his first appearing with the newly founded New York record company Baton Records. Just a year later, Kenner got a record deal with the established company Imperial Records , which included Fats Domino under contract. On his first Imperial single he published the title Sick and Tired , composed by him , with which he reached 13th place in the R&B charts. Between 1959 and 1961, Kenner published his records on several small record labels without making the hit lists with them again. Only with the change to Instant Records in his native New Orleans did the record success return. The company, founded in 1961, released its first single production with the Chris Kenner title I Like It Like That . The song, composed jointly by Kenner and Fats Domino, reached number two on the Billboard charts on both the Hot 100 and the R&B charts and sold over a million times. It was Kenner's greatest success as an interpreter. As a singer he only entered the charts once with his 1963 own composition Land of 1000 Dances (77th on Hot 100).
The title Land of 1000 Dances was also successful with other interpreters, including Wilson Pickett in the US, the 1st (R&B) and 6 (Hot 100) and a 22nd place in Great Britain. The Dave Clark Five came in seventh place in the US Hot 100 with the Kenner composition I Like It Like That . By 1983, ten Kenner songs were sung by other artists on the Hot 100. Kenner had late and outstanding success as a co-author with the song Here Comes the Hotstepper sung by Ini Kamoze , which was ranked number 1 in the USA in 1994 (Hot 100 ) and 2 (R&B) and ranked fourth in the UK charts.
Personal
In 1968, Kenner was sentenced to three years in prison for raping a minor. He later suffered from alcohol problems . He died of a heart attack in his hometown at the age of 46.
