Chris Woods (born December 25, 1925 in Memphis , Tennessee, † July 4, 1985 in New York ) was an American saxophonist (baritone and alto saxophone) and flautist of swing , rhythm & blues and modern jazz .

Chris Woods worked first in his hometown of Memphis, then in St. Louis , where he was with the Jeter-Pillars Orchestra . With this swing orchestra he played his first album, Somebody Done Stole my Blues , in 1952 . In 1962 Woods moved to New York City , where he worked as an accompanist for Sy Oliver , Dizzy Gillespie and Ted Curson . In the late 1960s he took part in the recordings of the jazz opera Escalator over the Hill . In 1974 he played in the band of Clark Terry , with whose big band he can also be heard on several recordings as a soloist on alto saxophone and flute.

In the mid-1970s he played a number of albums in Europe under his own name, in 1978 he recorded the album Modus Operandi for the Delmark Records label with Chicago musicians such as pianist Jim McNeely and trumpeter Greg Bobulinski . He was then a member of Count Basie's band from 1983 until his death .
