history

In the Praunheim settlement designed by Ernst May , a building site for a people's house was planned at a central location on Damaschkeanger . The project could not be implemented for financial reasons, whereupon the growing Roman Catholic community acquired the property. Martin Weber designed for this purpose a cubic wooden church, on December 20, 1930 ordained was. It received the patronage of Christ the King and was one of the first churches with this patronage since Pope Pius XI. 1925 set up the feast of Christ the King with his encyclical Quas primas for the universal church.

After the congregation became independent in 1951, the architects Hermann Mäckler and Alois Giefer were commissioned to fundamentally redesign the emergency church, which was completed in 1956. In 1975 the church was redesigned and greatly changed by the Frankfurt architect Hans Busch by turning the interior direction to the altar by 90 degrees. He also added the community center. Since January 1st 2017 the church belongs to the parish Sankt Marien Frankfurt am Main.

Christ the King Church, interior view

In terms of urban development, the Christkönigkirche is closely connected to the surrounding housing estate. With its cubic appearance, it joins the line of three-story flat-roofed housing developments. At the same time it stands out due to the red facade color and the slightly elevated location at a bend in the street. On the west facade, a bell carrier and a fish-shaped mosaic by Hans Leistikow indicate the sacred use. A staircase leads to the extensive building ensemble including the community rooms. The interior is characterized by the wooden structures of the ceiling and gallery. Behind the altar, a wall-high glass surface provides sufficient light and a view of the inner courtyard in the northwest. The altar island is raised by one step and surrounded by loose seating. The wall paintings are by Jupp Jost . In a side room in the north there is a chapel with a window made of concrete glass by Hans Busch.

On the outer facade of the church there are also murals with biblical motifs and sayings, which were designed by young people and confirmation courses of the congregation.
