The Church of the Ascension of Christ ( Serbian Вазнесењска црква Vaznesenjska crkva ) is a Serbian Orthodox church in Belgrade , Serbia . It is dedicated to the Ascension of Christ . The church is the Orthodox city church of Belgrade, the Ascension of Christ is the city festival or Slava of the city of Belgrade. The church belongs to the Archeparchy of Belgrade and Karlovci of the Serbian Orthodox Church.

The Ascension Church was built in 1863 by order of Prince Mihailo Obrenović and the Belgrade Metropolitan Mihailo as well as donations from Belgrade citizens according to the plans of Pavle Stanišić and Jovan Ristić . Josip Štok and Fernand Stevanov were responsible for the construction management. The icons were painted by Nikola Marković and Stefan Todorović. The original frescoes by Nikola Marković were replaced by those of the Russian painter Andrei Bicenko in 1937 .

In terms of building history, the beginning of the search for a so-called national style, which consciously turned away from the baroque of the last centuries and was increasingly oriented towards the Serbian Orthodox churches and monasteries of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance , was of particular architectural significance for Serbian church architecture . The search for this national style temporarily ended in the so-called Serbian-Byzantine style .

Serious damage to and in the church occurred during the Second World War during the bombing of Belgrade in 1941 and 1944. Due to the Allied air raid on Belgrade on April 16 and 17, 1944, the Orthodox Easter festival, many believers and priests in the church died together Church service.
