Christian Delphin Wexelsen
Christian Delphin Wexelsen (born March 24, 1830 in Østre Toten , Norway ; † January 4, 1883 in Christiania , Norway) was a Norwegian landscape painter from the Düsseldorf School .
Life
Wexelson, one of eight children of the farmer Wexel Hansen Wexelsen (1784–1867) and his wife Marie Louise, née Wexels (1793–1873), attended the Royal Drawing School Christiania from 1850 under David Arnesen (1818–1895). In 1853 he went to Düsseldorf , where he stayed until 1860. There he was enrolled at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1855 to 1859 and was a student of Hans Fredrik Gude's landscape class . After returning to Norway in 1860, he established himself as a freelance landscape painter and participated in the public art life of the Norwegian capital Christiania. He was a member of the Christiania Art Forum and a three-person art jury there. Wexelsen mainly painted landscapes from the lowlands of Norway, but also mountain landscapes, which were initially under the national romantic influence of his teacher Gude, as well as portraits, especially those of his parents. In 1869 he married Gunhild Voigt (1843-1896). He died of tuberculosis in 1883 . Wexelsen was a brother of the Norwegian writer Marie Wexelsen (1832-1911) and uncle of the Norwegian bishop and politician Vilhelm Andreas Wexelsen (1849-1909).
