Johan Christian Drejer (born December 8, 1982 in Copenhagen ) is a former Danish basketball player . He retired in March 2008 due to injury. He was the first Dane to be selected in the NBA Draft .

Career

Drejer started his basketball career at SISU, a club in his hometown of Copenhagen . As a teenager he played basketball, handball and soccer. In the 2000/01 season he played for SISU in the Danish first division and scored 17 points per game. At the same time he came to work for the Magic Great Danes, a selection team put together by the Danish Basketball Association, which took part in the game operations of the North European Basketball League (NEBL). Former NBA star Earvin "Magic" Johnson made a few guest appearances with the Magic Great Danes and said about Drejer at the time: “Let me take Christian Drejer to the USA. In two or three years he will be a well-known NBA player. "

At the age of 19 Drejer dominated the first Danish league and scored 31.6 points and 6.5 rebounds per game for SISU during the 2001/02 season and was named Player of the Year. In 2002 Drejer was also appointed to the Danish senior national team for the first time. He turned down offers from European professional clubs and moved to the University of Florida for the 2002/03 season . An ankle injury initially put him out of action. In his first year with the "Gators" he played 18 games and had averages of 3.6 points, 2.4 assists and 1.6 rebounds. In the 2003/04 season he played 20 games for Florida (10.2 points, 4.8 rebounds, 4.0 assists per use).

In February 2004 he left Florida and signed a contract with FC Barcelona . This change within the season as well as the previous consideration of a change was resented by his teammates and the coach. Drejer completed a total of 29 games in the Spanish league and six games in the Euroleague for Barca by the end of the 2004/05 season. He later described his time at FC Barcelona as "terrible" in an interview. During this time, the NBA Draft 2004 fell , in which Drejer was selected by the New Jersey Nets (second round, 51st place).

In the summer of 2005 he played for the New Jersey Nets in a summer league, but could not recommend himself there for a move to the NBA. He moved to the Italian first division club VidiVici Bologna for the 2005/06 season , where he then played until the end of the 2006/07 season.

In August 2007 Drejer signed a three-year contract with another Italian first division club, Lottomatica Virtus Rome . After two foot operations within six months, Drejer announced his retirement in March 2008 at the age of 25. He tried to get the injury problems under control, but it never really worked, Drejer's press release said.
