Ernst Lewalter

Ernst Lewalter (born August 29, 1892 in Hamburg , † May 18, 1956 in Hamburg) was a German German scholar , teacher and journalist . After the Second World War he published under the name Christian E. Lewalter .

Life

Ernst Lewalter in 1917 at the University of Munich to Dr. phil. doctorate and later took a position as a teacher at the Lichtwark School in Hamburg. After the Nazi regime closed the Lichtwark School , Lewalter switched to the Berlin Scherl publishing house. In the Federal Republic of Germany he first wrote articles for Merkur and from 1950 as Christian E. Lewalter regularly for DIE ZEIT .

Lewalter's journalistic work reveals three phases. In the Weimar Republic he contributed with essays in the debate on the sociology of knowledge and Marxism . In 1944 he became a member of the NSDAP . During the Nazi era, his book publications concentrated on heroic historical topics that underpinned the regime ideologically, for example his depiction of the colonial undertakings of Brandenburg Elector Friedrich Wilhelm in what is now Ghana ( Fort Groß Friedrichsburg ) from 1683 to 1721. The last The work of this phase was the robbery state of England , a scrapbook for cigarette pictures on behalf of the Cigarette Picture Service . As a ZEIT author, he devoted himself to questions of theater as well as cultural and university policy, but in 1952 he also critically returned to the sociology of knowledge of the Weimar Republic in a detailed article.
