Christian Kunz

Christian Kunz (born October 13, 1927 in Linz ; † April 12, 2020 in Vöcklabruck ) was an Austrian virologist and developer of a vaccine against the "tick disease" early summer meningoencephalitis (TBE).

Kunz completed a medical degree in Innsbruck and Vienna. In 1954 he received his doctorate and entered the Hygiene Institute at the University of Vienna . In 1957 he stayed for several months for study purposes in Freiburg, Tübingen and Marburg and in 1961/62 for a research stay at Rockefeller Laboratories in New York. In 1967 he was awarded the Cardinal Innitzer Prize . In 1971 he became a full professor and head of the newly founded Virology Institute in Vienna. In 1996 he retired. Between 1971 and 1973 he and his team developed a TBE vaccine , which he brought to market in 1976 thanks to the company Immuno AG .

In 2006 he received the Loeffler Frosch Medal of the Society for Virology .
