Christian Mersmann

Christian Mersmann (born May 3, 1952 in Braunschweig ) is a German agricultural scientist.

He has been Policy Advisor at the Global Donor Platform for Rural Development since 2014 . His work focuses on the private sector and trade and land governance . From 2012 to 2013 he was Senior Advisor for the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). From 2005 to 2012 he was Executive Director of the Global Mechanism, the strategic financial body of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). The Global Mechanism focuses on good governance in the financial sector, financing strategies and quality assurance of sector programs in the fields of integrated agriculture and forestry and adaptation to climate change in rural regions in all member states (193) of the Convention.

Christian Mersmann studied agricultural sciences and agricultural economics at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel and international development policy at the Technical University in Berlin . He received his doctorate in social economics from the Technical University in Berlin.

From 1981 to 1988 he was the program manager of various agricultural projects in Tunisia, Chad and Tanzania. In 1991 he completed his doctorate in Berlin. From 1991 to 1999 he worked on behalf of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) as an advisor to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) in global environmental policy and in international political processes. From 2000 to 2002 he was Director of the International Forest Program of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in New York and the World Bank in Washington with a focus on public and private financing of sustainable forest management and good governance . From 2002–2004 he worked as program coordinator for trade and the environment in the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in Rome.
