Christian Meyer (Sinologist)

Christian Meyer (born August 22, 1971 in Hanover ) is a German sinologist .

Life

After receiving his doctorate (Sinology) in October 2003; Rating: “summa cum laude”, dissertation topic: “Discussions of rites at the court of the northern Song period 1034-1093”, he was research assistant (sinology) from 2003 to 2011 , East Asian Institute, University of Leipzig . From October 2007 to September 2008 he was Adjunct Assistant Professor, Department of Cultural and Religious Studies, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (with a research grant from the DFG ). From October 2010 to September 2011 he was Visiting Fellow, International Research College (IKGF) “Destiny, Freedom and Forecast. Coping strategies in East Asia and Europe "(Fate, Freedom and Prognostication. Strategies for Coping with the Future in East Asia and Europe), University of Erlangen-Nuremberg . After completing his habilitation in Sinology in June 2012, he has been a private lecturer since July 2012 , licensed to teach Sinology at the University of Erlangen - Nuremberg . From September 2012 to September 2013 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study . From October 2013 to September 2014 he represented the professorship for Religious Studies and Mission Studies (with a focus on East Asia), Faculty of Philosophy and Theology Department, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. From October 2014 to December 2015 he was academic coordinator, Collaborative Research Cluster "The Making and Unmaking of the Religious" / Forum for interdisciplinary research on religion, University of Göttingen . From January to March 2016 he was Assistant Professor ( Tenure Track ) for East Asian Religions (joint appointment for Chinese Studies and Religious Studies). Since April 2016 he has been professor for the culture and history of pre-modern China at the Free University of Berlin . Since September 2018 he has held the professorship for culture and history of China with a focus on religions (Heisenberg professorship) at the Free University of Berlin .

His main research interests are the history and culture of China (since the Song Dynasty), religions in China, especially (neo) Confucianism, Christianity, Falun Gong, religious politics, Confucian rites discourses, religious discourses in modern China and the history of encounters and exchange processes between China and the West.
