Christian Springer (* 1946 in Vienna ) is an Austrian translator , specialist book author and music critic .

Life

Springer was born the son of a doctor in Vienna. From 1965 to 1969 he studied translation and interpreting at the University of Vienna and obtained the degree of Mag.phil. After completing his studies, he worked as a freelance translator and interpreter for Italian and from 1970 to 1979 as a lecturer in adult education. In addition to studying in Italy, Springer studied singing in Vienna, a. a. with Zdenko Kestranek and Ida Valjalo.

Since 1981 he has designed radio programs with the focus on "Italian opera" and "historical singers" for ORF , and since 1984 he has been publishing, mainly on Italian opera in the 19th century.

His works, written in German, Italian and English, have appeared in programs for opera houses and concert halls ( Vienna State Opera , Vienna Volksoper , Bregenz Festival , Zurich Opera House , Vienna Opera Workshop, Saarland State Theater , Vienna Music Association , Vienna Konzerthaus , Berlin Philharmonic , Grafenegg Castle Concerts, etc.) as well as in music publications ( Austrian music magazine , Il Giornale della Musica, Musica, The Record Collector etc.) in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and England. His music reviews and specialist contributions have been published in Spanish translation in Scherzo (Madrid) and with the Asociación Bilbaina de Amigos de la Ópera.

From 2000 he published books, mainly on the person and the works of Giuseppe Verdi . Another extensive work on the occasion of the 200th birthday of Giuseppe Verdi was published in February 2013. In April 2013, director's theater and opera came - irreconcilable opposites? out. A revised and greatly expanded version was published in September 2016 under the title Humbug & Mumpitz - "Regietheater" in the opera . After an acclaimed reading of his satires in Vienna, he published 24 satires in June 2017 . A detailed review of Verdi's reception by the critic Eduard Hanslick was published in February 2018.

He has also given lectures in Vienna ( University of Vienna , Austrian Society for Music, Vienna State Opera, Italian Cultural Institute, House of Music , Karajan Center , Scientific Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences), Salzburg (Festival Dialogues) and Graz ( Karl-Franzens -Universität ), took part in discussions ( ORF TV, Volkstheater , Radiokulturhaus ) and advised directors, conductors and singers.
