Christiane Eilders

Christiane Eilders (* 1962 ) is a German professor of communication science . Her research interests lie in the field of reception and impact research in the context of public communication. This includes in particular research into the theory of the spiral of silence and the importance of news factors in public discourse online and offline. Eilders has been Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf since 2011 and has been a member of the Social Sciences Expert Committee of the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 2016 .

Christiane Eilders received her doctorate in 1996 from LMU Munich on the role of news factors in the reception of political content. She then worked at the Science Center for Social Research in Berlin and as a scientific consultant at the Hans Bredow Institute in Hamburg. In 2006 she completed her habilitation at the Free University of Berlin on the subject of structures for forming public opinion in the national quality press. Also in 2006, Eilders succeeded Frank Brettschneider at the Institute for Media and Educational Technology ( imb for short ) at the University of Augsburg's Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences . Along with Gabi Reinmann (media pedagogy) and Lutz Mauermann (media laboratory), she is a founding member of the imb and, like all representatives of the institute, taught primarily in the bachelor's and master's degree in media and communication. In 2010 she worked as a fellow at the Kolleg research group “The Transformative Power of Europe” at the Free University of Berlin and also completed guest stays in San Diego and Ankara as well as a visiting professorship at the University of Zurich (2015).

Christiane Eilders has been Professor of Communication and Media Studies at Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf since 2011 . In research and teaching, she deals with public discourse and public opinion formation and examines the role of established mass media and online communication in this process. As part of several DFG-funded projects, her research interests focused on the perception of public opinion and the resulting willingness to articulate. As a board member of the Düsseldorf Internet Institute (DIID) (since 2018), she is also dedicated to researching deliberative dynamics in online discourses, for example in the context of political participation processes.

Christiane Eilders works in numerous professional groups. She is co-editor of the journal Publizistik (since 2012), member of the scientific advisory board of the Federal Agency for Civic Education (since 2012), specialist board member for social sciences as well as part of the DFG research group "Political Communication in the Online World" and chairwoman of the advisory board of the Weizenbauminstitut Berlin (since 2019).
