Christiane Henriette von Pfalz-Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld (born November 16, 1725 in Rappoltsweiler , † February 11, 1816 in Arolsen ) was a Countess Palatine of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld and by marriage Princess of Waldeck and Pyrmont .

Life

Christiane Henriette was a daughter of the Count Palatine and Duke Christian III. von Zweibrücken (1674–1735) from his marriage to Karoline (1704–1774), daughter of Count Ludwig Kraft von Nassau-Saarbrücken . Christiane Henriette was a sister of the Zweibrücker Duke Christian IV , the Great Landgrave and Field Marshal Friedrich Michael . She was also an aunt of the first Bavarian King Maximilian I.

On August 19, 1741, she married Prince Karl von Waldeck and Pyrmont (1704–1763) in Zweibrücken . After the death of her husband, she exercised guardianship for her first-born son in the principality from 1764 to 1766. Franz Friedrich Rothweil built the New Palace in Arolsen as a widow's residence (Wittumspalais) for the princess between 1764 and 1778 .

Christiane Henriette was considered to be art-loving and scientifically highly educated. She was a close friend of the anthropologist Johann Friedrich Blumenbach . Christiane set up a comprehensive library, which in 1788 comprised around 6,000 volumes, and maintained a cabinet of art and natural objects in her Arolsen residence .

When Christiane Henriette died at the old age of 90, she left behind considerable debts, which is why parts of her library and painting collection had to be auctioned in 1820 and was buried in the tree park of the New Palace in Arolsen.
