Bad Arolsen New Castle

The New Castle is a castle with an adjoining park in Bad Arolsen, North Hesse, in the Waldeck-Frankenberg district, near the Arolser Residenzschloss . It is used by the Schön Klinik as one of two clinic buildings in its renowned tinnitus clinic in Bad Arolsen.

history

Castle construction and reconstruction

The palace was built between 1763 and 1778 by master builders Franz Friedrich Rothweil and Johannes Mathäus Kitz as the widow's seat of Princess Christiane , the widow of Karl August Friedrich von Waldeck-Pyrmont . In terms of urban planning, it was arranged on the main axis of the residential palace , which is within sight.

The interior was in the Rococo style . The art and natural history cabinet as well as the library of the versatile educated princess were also located in the New Palace. After the construction work was completed, a large, English-style palace park was created , which was planted in a variety of ways and predominantly with exotic conifers from the Princess' collection. To the south it ended with a large, terraced fruit and vegetable garden. In a travel guide from 1785, the "Princess Garden" was described as a special beauty.

In 1853 the palace was redesigned for the widow Emma von Waldeck and Pyrmont according to plans by Wilhelm Braß and master builder Franz Curtze in the classicism style.

Younger and youngest usage

After 1945 refugees were housed there. In 1963 the city of Arolsen took over the building. In 1970 a Kurbetriebs-GmbH was founded and the renovation work to a castle hotel began, which lasted until 1974.

During construction work in January 1971, the roof structure fell into flames and burned out completely. Reconstruction began in the same year, with the building being extended by three window axes on the south side. As a result, the original castle portal no longer forms the optical center of the building, but appears to be slightly “shifted” asymmetrically.

After completion in 1974, the castle was operated as the “Neues Schloss” hotel. The former castle hotel has been used as a tinnitus clinic since 1992, following a change of ownership in 1998 and an extension in the same year .

Varia

  • During the renovation work and the fire in 1971, the characteristic castle atmosphere was largely lost. The area of the originally mirror-inverted, double-sided staircase, probably from the time of the renovation in 1853, gives a small authentic impression. The dark, creaky oak steps - both visible from the use side and when looking up under the stairs - give an idea of how it was once there. However, the cast iron railing and oak handrail date from later times.
  • An approximately eleven meter long section of the connecting passage between the castle and the annex, which is glazed on one side, provides a historical insight: Some large, artistically designed stone carvings of the castle's former oriel and facade decorations are on display. On the wall side, selected dates name and explain the history of the building in large letters.

Healing spring castle fountain

In the years 1972/1973 a successful drilling for healing water was sunk in the castle park . Calcium-magnesium sulfate was found at a depth of about 400 meters. The healing water found stimulates the intestinal function and has a regulating effect on gastric juices , it is also suitable for eliminating disorders of the biliary and liver function .

The medicinal water is distributed in the pump room from May to October daily from 10.30 a.m. to 11.15 a.m. and from 4.00 p.m. to 4.45 p.m., and from November to April from Sunday to Friday from 10.30 a.m. to 11.15 a.m.
