Rhena moated castle

The moated castle Rhena , also called lower castle , is the remainder of a moated castle below the church of the district Rhena (Zur alten Mühle 11) of the district town Korbach in the district Waldeck-Frankenberg ( Hesse ).

The moated castle was probably built by Reinhard von Rhena around 1555. Today only two stone houses are left of the castle, which are at right angles to each other and are now used as barns. Some of the ornamental parts are probably made by the stonemason Philipp Soldan .

One of the stone houses previously served as a residential building. Remains of the double coat of arms of Reinhard von Rhena and his wife Anna von Hanstein are walled in above a round arched portal that is now walled up. The year 155 * is indented in the double coat of arms . The full year can no longer be read because part of the Hanstein coat of arms has been lost. Both houses are two-story with a high pitched roof with a brick-walled half-timbering on each gable side.
