Mengeringhausen Castle

The castle Mengeringhausen is a Wasserburg southwest of the old town of Mengeringhausen (Highway 72), a district of the city of Bad Arolsen in Waldeck-Frankenberg in Hesse .

history

The castle as a moated castle in the center of the picture (Merian section)

The Mengeringhausen moated castle was founded in the 13th century by the Counts of Waldeck and was first established in 1382 with Count Heinrich VI. von Waldeck and his wife Elisabeth, daughter of the Count of Ravensburg and Berg, mentioned as residents. From 1696 to 1728 the castle was the seat of the Waldeck country chancellery, whose authorities then moved into the newly created Arolsen residence.

In the later years, the castle experienced many changes of ownership. Agriculture was separated from the castle. Twice, in 1929 and 1960, the castle suffered severe damage from fires. It was rebuilt with the help of the preservation authorities.

Most recently, the former castle was used as a hotel and restaurant until mid-2018. It was sold in 2019.

description

The building is three-story with an irregular floor plan and a thick round tower on the northern narrow side. The two lower floors made of stone support the upper half-timbered floor, which was plastered uniformly with the masonry of the lower floors after the fire in 1929. The slate roof and the octagonal, boarded and also slate-covered top of the tower look modern. On the left above the door there is an overturned coat of arms stone .
