Goddelsheim Castle

The castle Goddelsheim is an Outbound Wasserburg in Goddelsheim , a district of Lichtenfels in northern Hesse Waldeck-Frankenberg .

history

The date the castle was built is not known. In the 12th century, the Waldeck bailiff Heinemann von Gaugreben (also Gogreve or Gaugrebe) had large estates in Goddelsheim, including a moated castle near the church. In 1423 his grandson Hermann transferred the entire family property to Landgrave Ludwig I of Hesse and received it back as a man fief . The moated castle, like the defunct Eschenbeck castle , served to protect the County of Waldeck from the Archdiocese of Cologne .

In the 16th century, after the Reformation , the Gaugrebe family split into two, a Protestant line with Ernst Moritz von Gaugrebe in 1798, and a Catholic line, which died out in the male line with Otto-Friedrich von Gaugrebe in 1809 . After 1817 the entire property was leased and later split up and sold. The buildings were gradually removed and the moats filled.

State of preservation

The archway and a vaulted cellar made of rubble stones have been preserved . On the initiative and sponsorship of the Association for the Preservation of Old Cultural Property Goddelsheim eV , the renovation of the vault began in 1997, with financial support from the city of Lichtenfels and the state of Hesse. The impending decay of the cultural monument could thus be stopped.

The wall on the south side is equipped with loopholes and is about one meter thick. A Neidkopf with the year 1580 is built into the southeast corner . (This stone is upside down, the reason for this is not known) Above the Gothic entrance gate is the family coat of arms of the von Gaugreben , a Westphalian- Waldeck noble family who lived in Goddelsheim for almost six centuries.
