The castle Eschenbeck is an Outbound castle in the district of Goddelsheim between Goddelsheim and Hillershausen in northern Hesse Waldeck-Frankenberg .

location

The hilltop castle was at 395  m above sea level. NN north-west of Goddelsheim, in a small side valley of the Aar , near the Waldeck western border to today's North Rhine-Westphalia , the exact location cannot be determined.

history

By whom and when the castle was built is not known. In 1270 it was owned by the Counts of Waldeck . It is not certain whether it was already in the possession of Count Adolf I (1228–1270) or only came into the possession of the Waldecker with his successor Adolf II . In 1370, Count Heinrich VI. a contract with the Hessian Landgrave Hermann II to protect his territory against the Archdiocese of Cologne . Hesse bought half of the castle from Waldeck.

It is not known when the castle was abandoned or perhaps destroyed and then fell into disrepair. A dairy was built in its place , which still existed around 1850. After that it was probably canceled completely. Due to afforestation and the creation of a pond , no remains of the castle and dairy are visible today.

In 2002 the "Association for the Preservation of Old Cultural Property Goddelsheim eV" placed two memorial plaques near the site as a reminder of the castle.
