Ringwall Hünenkeller

The ring wall Hünenkeller is a former early medieval ring wall on the western outskirts of the Lengefeld district of the district town of Korbach in the northern Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg .

location

About three kilometers west of Korbach, on the edge of the Waldeck Upland above the western outskirts of Lengefeld in the "Lengefelder Holz" at 451  m above sea level. NN are the remains of the Hünenkeller ring wall system.

history

The ring wall was probably built in the middle of the 9th century and probably dates from the Ottonian period. Other sources report a date of origin around 750. Lengefeld under Lenkevelde was first mentioned in a document in 1036 as the Vorwerk of the Paderborn manor in Korbach . It is possible that the castle was still the ancestral seat of the Lords of Lengefeld in the 13th century , who were first mentioned in documents in 1228 before they moved into the lower moated castle . It is not certain when it was given up. Extensive excavations took place between 1962 and 1974.

investment

Of the oval horseshoe-shaped system with an opening to the south, parts of the eastern wall and remains of the wall at the south entrance are still visible. Holes in the ground indicate collapsed cellars.

To the east, only approx. 400 m below, in the local area, is the former Lengefeld moated castle with a beautiful mansion that still exists today.

The legend of the Hünenkeller

According to legend, gigantic giants are said to have lived in this place, which are said to have been hostile to people. From their underground dwelling, they are said to have unsettled the area and stole children.
