The former castle Geppenhagen is a defunct Niederungsburg in the now desolate village Geppenhagen near Freienhagen between Bühle and Höhnscheid Castle in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg .

history

The castle, probably a tower castle with a wooden structure, and the place are first mentioned in a document around 1150. The founding and name of the place are attributed to Gepa von Itter , the founder of the Aroldessen monastery . Neither the date of construction of the castle nor the time or cause of its deterioration or destruction are known. In the 13th and 14th centuries, Messrs. Wolff von Gudenberg are named as owners. The village was already deserted before 1487. In 1542 the Counts of Waldeck became owners.

Current condition

The parcel on which the castle was located is still called "Burgplatz" today. Remains of the moat , which is now swampy, can still be seen in the forest thicket . About 1 km to the north is the " Jeppenteich ", the name of which was probably derived from the village and castle.
