Christianus Carolus Henricus van der Aa (born August 25, 1718 in Zwolle , † September 23, 1793 in Haarlem ) was a Dutch Lutheran theologian.

Life

Christianus Carolus Henricus van der Aa was the son of the preacher Balduin van der Aa († 1741), who worked in Zwolle, and his wife. He studied Protestant theology in Leiden and from 1737 in Jena . On March 22, 1739 he became a Lutheran preacher in Alkmaar and then on August 12, 1742 in Haarlem. On October 16, 1742, he married Catharina Koopman.

Van der Aa worked in Haarlem until his death, enjoyed a high reputation as a preacher and even attracted listeners from other church communities. In his early years, however, he is said to have preached too theatrically and his warning speeches were almost exclusively dedicated to the more educated members of his community. He was involved in the establishment of the Dutch Society of Sciences ( Hollandsche Maatschappij van Wetenschappen ) in Haarlem in 1752 and became its first permanent secretary. He also wrote several articles on natural history for their reports . In 1772 his portrait was engraved by Houbraken after a miniature made by Marinkelle. A year before his death (1792) he celebrated his 50th anniversary as a preacher in Haarlem, whereupon one of the best Dutch artists, Johann Georg Holtzhey , made a commemorative coin.

Van der Aa's sermons, which are characterized by eloquence, were printed between 1747 and 1792. His work on natural history was published in 1798 in Algemeene Vaderlandsche Letterœfeningen .
