Colonel Emil Hell

Emil Hell (born May 26, 1864 in Giegel , † January 24, 1931 in Groß Grieben ) was a Prussian major general in the First World War .

Life

On October 1, 1884, Hell joined the East Prussian Field Artillery Regiment No. 1 of the Prussian Army as a flag junior . In the same year he became a member of the Corps Thuringia Leipzig . On June 13, 1885 he was promoted to second lieutenant and as such was used as an adjutant of the I. Department from October 1, 1889 . From October 1, 1892 to July 21, 1895 he was assigned to the War Academy and meanwhile promoted Hell on September 14, 1893 to Prime Lieutenant . On April 1, 1896, he was assigned to the General Staff and on March 22, 1897, he was transferred here. There Hell received his promotion to captain on November 18, 1897 . As such, he served from April 18, 1901 to September 11, 1903 as the battery chief in the 1st Posenen Field Artillery Regiment No. 20 . Then Hell was active again in the General Staff, before becoming First General Staff Officer on April 22, 1905 in the General Staff of the 1st Division . As a major (since September 15, 1904) Hell was transferred to the General Staff of the XVII on January 27, 1907 . Army Corps , only to be reassigned to the General Staff two years later. From there, on October 18, 1909, he was appointed commander of the 1st Division of the 1st Masurian Field Artillery Regiment No. 73 .

Since May 22, 1914 Colonel , he moved as Chief of Staff of the XX. Army Corps in the First World War . In this role, Hell initially took part in the border guard in East Prussia and the Battle of Tannenberg . He became Chief of the General Staff of the 10th Army on January 26, 1915 and Chief of the General Staff of the Bug Army and Army Group Linsingen on July 17, 1916 . Already on December 6, 1916, he was relieved of this post and appointed Chief of the General Staff of Army Group Mackensen . Promoted to major general on May 20, 1917 , he became commander of the 28th division on June 13, 1918 , then chief of staff of Army Group "Duke Albrecht von Württemberg" on September 7, and chief of staff of Army Group Eichhorn on October 31, 1918 -Kiev. After the war ended, Hell was transferred to the army officers on November 18, 1918 and released from active service on April 2, 1919.

After his departure, Hell managed the Groß-Grieben family estate on the Tannenberg battlefield. From 1925 he represented Osterode in the provincial parliament of the province of East Prussia . He died of a myocardial infarction on his property .
