The Christian School Johanneum is a state-recognized substitute school in Hoyerswerda , which is named after John the Baptist . The school with its Christian mission statement became known through the visit of Federal President Horst Köhler, among other things .

history

The Evangelical Grammar School was founded on August 21, 1992 as the third grammar school in Hoyerswerda with 12 teachers and 172 students. However, it was not recognized until July 1996, so that the first Abitur could be passed in 1997. On December 1, 2005, the church gave up the sponsorship of the school due to the falling number of pupils; it was taken over by the newly founded Johanneum Hoyerswerda school sponsoring association. At that time the high school had 400 students and 39 teachers.

On April 27, 2006, Federal President Horst Köhler visited the school together with the Saxon Prime Minister Georg Milbradt . He praised the teacher-student relationship and recalled the construction of the gymnasium, which was still unfinished at the time. On May 19, 2007 the Knights' Day of the Silesian Cooperative of the Order of St. John took place in the school.

Since the 2016/17 school year, the offer has been expanded to include a 5th grade in the Oberschule course and the name of the school has been changed to Christian School Johanneum.

Festivals

Every year the Johannesfest takes place, which is understood as a foundation festival. There are also traditional festivals on November 11th, carnival and an open day. Every year the student theater group "Shakespeare English Drama Group" plays a play by Shakespeare in the school.

Mission statement

The concept of the Johanneum is based on the Christian image of man and the Bible. The aim is to lead the students to a social and responsible life. From the theological point of view there are school church services and social internships for this purpose, on the pedagogical side the keywords patience, mutual respect and mutual openness are mentioned, whereby this should apply to both the teacher-student and the student-student relationship. The Johanneum sees itself as a schola semper reformanda , i.e. as a school that has to constantly review its educational and structural means in order to maintain a good education.

student

One third of the students are Protestant, Catholic and non-denominational. Only about half of them come from Hoyerswerda, the rest from the surrounding area, especially around Spremberg , Senftenberg and Bautzen . The foreign languages that can be selected are comparatively numerous with English, French, Latin, Russian, ancient Greek, Spanish and Sorbian . In addition, there are working groups for Polish and Hebrew, which are offered depending on demand.
