Christof Kessler

Christof Kessler (born May 4, 1950 in Katowice ) is a German neurologist and author. He works in the field of stroke research and the care of stroke patients.

Life

In 1957 the family moved from Poland to Wetzlar in Hesse. In 1969 Kessler passed the Abitur at the Goethe-Gymnasium Wetzlar. Kessler studied human medicine at the Justus Liebig University in Giessen and the Ruprecht Karls University in Heidelberg and received his license to practice medicine in 1977 . In the same year he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . In 1986 he received the specialist certification for neurology .

From 1986–1987 he was senior physician at the neurological clinic of the Cologne Merheim hospitals and from 1987–1993 senior physician and deputy clinic director at the neurological clinic of the medical university in Lübeck.

In 1989 , Kessler completed his habilitation in neurology with a topic on stroke diagnostics. In 1992 he was appointed C 3 professor for neurology. From January 1994 to December 2016, Kessler was director of the Clinic and Polyclinic for Neurology and professor for neurology at Ernst-Moritz Arndt University. When he took office, the previous psychiatric clinic was divided into a clinic for neurology and a clinic for psychiatry. He is the first professor for neurology at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald .

Kessler is married to the urologist Petra Kessler-Zumpe and has four children.

Since January 2017 he has been working freelance in his private and expert practice and as a book author.

Services

Research and clinical activities focus on improving stroke care. The first certified stroke unit in the new federal states was established in Greifswald . Kessler is a member of the certification committee of the German Stroke Society. In 1996 he co-founded the Faculty's Community Medicine research network and was its spokesperson until 2002. From 2002 to 2016 he was spokesman for the neurosciences department at the University Medical Center Greifswald. He was a member of the Academic Senate from 2008–2014 and Deputy Senate Chairman from 2010–2014. From 2008–2016, Kessler was an elected member of the faculty council, from 2014–2016 he was vice dean and member of the hospital board and the faculty's structural committee. He was head of the BMBF-funded project “Genetic and non-genetic risk factors for cardiovascular diseases” and was in charge of acquiring numerous third-party funded projects (including Impact G: Cerebral Plasticity, EU funding with a volume of> 1.2 million €). He has translated the neurological parts of the international classification of neurological diseases (ICD-10) on behalf of the World Health Organization.
