Christoph Burkard (born November 14, 1983 in Rottweil ) is a German swimmer and Paralympics winner. Both lower legs are missing from birth. He is a member of the TV Rottweil and TSV Rottweil clubs.
Personal history
Burkard graduated from the Hauptschule in Zimmer ob Rottweil in 1999 , then graduated from the Metall Rottweil vocational college in 2001 and obtained the general university entrance qualification in 2004 from the Rottweil Technical High School. After graduating with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Furtwangen University , Schwenningen campus, he is currently doing his master's degree with a focus on sales and service engineering. In addition to swimming, he goes skiing and cycling, plays table tennis, goes inline skating and plays the trombone.
Athletic career
Burkard received his first prostheses at the age of one . As a child he got a pair of skis from his godmother, and subsequently became German youth champion on skis.
Burkard has already participated in four Paralympic competitions. While in 2000 at the age of 16 he was able to achieve two fourth places at the Games in Sydney (100 m chest and 400 m freestyle), he even won the gold medal at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens and swam a world record over 400 m Freestyle. At the Summer Paralympics 2008 in Beijing , she also achieved a 4th place in the 400 m freestyle and an 8th place in the 100 m chest. Burkard was able to achieve a bronze medal at the 2012 Summer Paralympics over 100 m breasts.
Burkard was able to achieve victories in German as well as international competitions and has also set various records.
He has been trained by Sigisbert Ackermann since 1995 .
Awards
In 2007 he was awarded the Brigitta Blomquist challenge cup at the German Championships in Berlin as the best German male participant.
For his bronze medal at the Paralympic Games in 2012, Burkard was awarded the Silver Laurel Leaf for the second time by the Federal President after 2004 .
