Christoph Helmig

Christoph Helmig (born August 18, 1973 in Seppenrade ) is a German classical philologist and historian of philosophy .

Life

From 1994 to 2002 he studied classical studies and philosophy with Matthias Baltes and John M. Dillon at the University of Münster and at Trinity College Dublin . From 1998 to 2000 he was a fellow at the Center for the Study of the Platonic Tradition in Dublin. In 2001 he graduated as MLitt in Classics (Dublin) with a study on Plutarch's De sera numinis vindicta and in 2002 as Magister and the 1st state examination (Münster). From 2002 to 2006 he carried out research at the De Wulf-Mansion Center at the KU Leuven on a doctoral grant from FWO Flanders . In philosophy he acquired in Leuven the title Dr. phil. with the dissertation Ideas and Concepts. Proclus' Theory of Knowledge between Platonic Recollection and Aristotelian Abstraction . Since 2006 he has been a member of the Academia Platonica (Münster). From 2006 to 2008 he was a postdoctoral fellow at FWO Flanders in the De Wulf-Mansion Center at the University of Leuven and in 2008 academic coordinator of the Graduate School for Ancient Philosophy with Christof Rapp . He was at the Humboldt University in Berlin from 2008 to 2012 (assistant (philosophy), then junior professor for classical philology (with a focus on late antiquity )). Since October 2012 he has been teaching as a university professor for philosophy with a focus on ancient philosophy at the University of Cologne .

His research interests are ancient philosophy, history of Platonism / Aristotelianism , ancient epistemology / concepts - concept formation, ancient and late ancient theories of place / space (topos) and philosophy in Rome.
