Master of Letters

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Master of Letters (common abbreviation as MLitt , from Latin: Magister litterarum ) is an academic postgraduate degree in a literature, art, history or economics research course. You can find degrees of this kind ( Research Master Degrees ) mainly in Great Britain, Ireland, Australia and, more rarely, in the USA.

Great Britain

The MLitt is awarded at a few universities in Great Britain, including a .:

It is often used as a differentiating criterion in the confusing market for "Master of Science" or "Master of Arts" degrees, as it is mainly awarded by universities, which are among the most prestigious in Europe. Most universities do a similar thing to Bristol University in that they require the University Senate to handpick and accept the graduate applicant as an entry requirement . The MLitt is not infrequently rated higher in the hierarchy than the Philosophy Master's degree and, as at the Wycliffe Hall at the University of Oxford, is made dependent on the previous acquisition of a degree such as “Master of Studies” or “Master of Philosophy”. Many universities in England, Wales and Scotland offer Master of Letters as an alternative to Master of Philosophy. The research courses are usually two-year long and contain little or no compulsory courses.

This qualification can also be found in a wide field of economics such as international business, but also in the humanities such as " Divinity , Fine Art , Humanities or Social Sciences ."

Ireland

Australia

Universities in Australia offer MLitt graduation in a variety of courses such as: B. Creative Writing ( Creative Writing ), Film, History, Liberal Studies, Literature, Media Studies ( media studies ) and Visual Culture ( Visual Studies ) at.

United States (USA)

The M.Litt. is only awarded at four universities in the USA.

  • The Middlebury College in Vermont offers the conclusion of highly skilled Bachelors in literature.
  • The Drew University in New Jersey offers the degree as part of its "Doctor of Letters".
  • The Mary Baldwin College in Virginia assigns a specific M.Litt. for in-depth two-year research on Shakespeare and Renaissance literature. It is an intermediate graduation within your three-year “Master of Fine Arts” course.
  • The Oxford Graduate School in Tennessee also has an M.Litt. Degree, which is awarded here for the course “Family Life Education and Organizational Leadership”.
