biography

At the age of 14 he joined the armed forces as a military cadet, where he also received his basic education. In the following years he served in the army during the battles against the attempts to retake Haiti . At the time of the renewed annexation of the Dominican Republic by Spain in 1861 , he served as a captain in a unit in his native city of San Juan de la Maguana. However, shortly afterwards he joined the republican -minded Red Party (Partido Rojo), gained increasing influence in his home province of San Juan and eventually rose to become a general . As early as 1876 he ran for the office of president, but was defeated by Ulises Francisco Espaillat (24,329 votes) and only received the fourth-best result with 254 votes after Gregorio Luperón (559 votes) and Manuel María Gautier (452 votes).

After the death of dictator Ulises Heureaux on July 26, 1899, he succeeded him as President of the Dominican Republic as acting Vice President and Minister of War (Ministro de Guerra). He tried in vain to pursue the revolutionaries and to arrest them in Moca . Soon after, the entire country is in a state of emergency and the revolution continues to spread from Cibao . On August 31, he was overthrown by General Horacio Vásquez , who succeeded him as President. Figuereo himself then withdrew from political life and a short time later went into exile in Madrid .
