Life

From 1963 onwards, Christoph Hessel received his first drawing lessons from his own mother. From 1965 to 1967 he worked in Ernst Geitlinger's studio and received private tuition from Peter Collien from 1967 to 1971 . From 1973 to 1979 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Professors Mac Zimmermann (free painting and printmaking, until 1978) and Horst Sauerbruch (art education). He worked as an art teacher until his retirement, most recently at the Wittelsbacher Gymnasium in Munich. He is a long-standing member of the Association for Original Etching , of which he was 2nd Chairman from 1994 to 2017.

Christoph Hessel is primarily an eraser . In addition to his job as a teacher, he always worked as a freelancer. He is known for his large-format and mostly colored etchings, in which he uses all variants of this printing technique. Often the motifs arise precisely from the technical experiment, even if it always remained objective. His early pictures are indebted to the surrealism of his teacher Mac Zimmermann. Since the 1980s, the motifs have happily turned into barely penetrable conglomerates of figures, shapes and narrative scraps.
