Christopher Columbus (computer game)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christopher Columbus is a computer game from 1994 developed and published by Software 2000. The game was also sold under the alternative titles Voyages of Discovery (English-language Amiga version) and Exploration: A Game of Strategy and World Conquest .

Gameplay

The game is set in the Age of Discovery and accordingly begins in 1492 . The player takes on the role of a well-known seafarer: Christopher Columbus ( Spain ), Vasco da Gama ( Portugal ), Le Maire ( Netherlands ), James Cook ( Great Britain ) or Bougainville ( France ).

In the home port, the player first equips his ship and then uses it to explore the map in 2D top view, of which only a small part is initially known. When he discovers a new island, he can drop settlers or military units ashore and explore the interior. If he comes across native settlements , he can take possession of them either by battle or by trade. As a result, it is possible to expand the cities further or to set up plantations or mines in the surrounding area. The player can then sell the cultivation or extraction products at the dealer in his home port and invest the profits in expanding his fleet, army or colonies.

If you come across settlements, ships or units of an opponent (who is controlled either by the AI or by a human teammate), a conflict is usually inevitable. If one succeeds in taking an opposing settlement, the surrounding plantations and mines also fall to one; Alternatively, you can only attack these and thus deprive the opponent of his sources of income. It is also possible to attack someone else's ship and either sink or capture it ( in this case a previously acquired letter of piracy prevents a possible excommunication , which seriously damages the social reputation).

The aim of the game is to outperform the competition economically and militarily or to eliminate it entirely and to become a royal advisor within 300 years.
