Christoph Matthäus
Christoph Matthäus , also Christoffel Matthaeus (born November 29, 1608 in Marburg , † June 11, 1647 in Harderwijk ) was a German rhetorician, historian and doctor in the Netherlands.
Life
Christoph was born as the son of the professor of law in Marburg, Herborn and Groningen Anton Matthäus (1564–1637) and his wife Elisabeth, the daughter of the archivist Eckhard Schulers. Apparently he had studied at the University of Groningen and Utrecht University , where he received his doctorate in medicine on September 24, 1641 . Before that, he had studied literature, philosophy and history. Two years earlier he had been Vice Rector in Harderwijk.
In 1644 he became professor of rhetoric and the Greek language at the University of Harderwijk , which he took up on May 28 with a solemn speech. He was then appointed professor of medicine. He was married to Helena, the daughter of Johann Isaak Pontanus (1571-1639) , since September 8, 1639 . Only his work, Historia Alexandri magni S. prodromus quatuor Monarchiarum , has come down to us.
