Christoph Sapovius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christoph Sapovius (* around 1660 (?); † August 21, 1710 in Berlin ) was a sculptor in Danzig and Berlin. David, Johann or Christof are also given as his first name and there are numerous spellings of his last name (Sapowius, Sappovius, Sappowius, Sopovius, Zappovius, Zappowius, Zapouius, Sapau, Sapow and Sapovi).

Live and act

Sapovius came from the Palatinate. In 1680 it was first mentioned in the church records of the Reformed St. Elisabeth Church in Gdansk . Although he never belonged to the Gdańsk sculptors' guild and did not have civil rights, he made close contacts with the locals. He married Concordia, b. Kadau, whose father was the Danzig goldsmith Ernst Kadau. The marriage resulted in (at least) three daughters. In 1691 Christoph Sapovius had his daughter Concordia baptized in the Elisabeth Church, in 1701 he and his wife were mentioned there.

Sapovius had a small workshop in Danzig and also trained apprentices. It has long been assumed that Sapovius was Andreas Schlueter's first teacher , but this role is more likely to be attributed to his father of the same name. Occasionally, however, there should have been collaboration between Schlueter and Sapovius. Around 1680/82, for example, a sculptor Sapovius worked on the new Royal Chapel in Danzig, as did Andreas Schlueter. In 1702, Andreas Schlueter applied for a Johann Sapovius to enter Berlin to rebuild the palace .

Christoph Sapovius had lived in Berlin since 1704 at the latest. There he died in 1710 after a two-year illness as a royal court sculptor.

The daughter Concordia married the sculptor Anton Clasen in Berlin in 1711.
