Christopher Stephens (born March 20, 1973 in Glasgow ) is a Scottish politician of the Scottish National Party (SNP).

Life

Stephens was born in Glasgow in 1973. He attended Trinity High School in Renfrew . Stephens was one of the leading representatives of the UNISON union in Glasgow. He is a supporter of the Glasgow football club Partick Thistle .

Political career

Stephens is chairman of the SNP trade union group. and member of the SNP Executive Committee.

For the British general election in 2001 , the SNP placed Stephens in the constituency of Hamilton North and Bellshill . On election day, however, he was clearly defeated by Labor candidate John Reid . In both 2007 and 2011 , Stephens ran for a seat in the Scottish Parliament . In his constituency, Glasgow Pollok, however, he was defeated in both cases by Labor MP Johann Lamont . As sixth place on the SNP's electoral list in the 2014 European elections , he missed the entry into the European Parliament .

At the general election in 2010 Stephens candidate in the constituency of Glasgow South West . However, he could not prevail against incumbent Labor MP Ian Davidson . With the massive increase in votes of the SNP in the British general election in 2015 , Stephens finally won the mandate of Glasgow South West and subsequently moved into the British lower house for the first time . With a lead of only 60 votes over the second-placed Labor candidate, Stephens defended his mandate in the early general election 2017 .
