history

Name-giving Christophorus figure at the Christophel house

The name is probably derived from the figure of Christophorus at the Zum Christophel house at the end of the street. The building from which it is named is a listed building, however, already on Simeonstrasse . The street originally ran on the edge of the city wall and became part of the avenue ring when it was dissolved.

Historic buildings in the street

There are several important cultural monuments in the Christophstraße monument zone. Most of the buildings on the street date from between 1892 and 1912. A detailed list of all historic buildings on the street can be found here . Only the most important buildings are briefly explained in the following.

The most prominent building on the street is the former Reichsbahndirektion with a former servants' residential wing at the beginning of the street and not far from the main train station . The four-wing complex also extends along the Balduinstrasse, which is connected here . The architect Karl Albermann mainly imitated elements of the baroque. The main wing with a mansard roof is three-story, the side wings are four-story. The building dates from 1922–1925. The building defines the cityscape and is the first visible monumental building on the way from the train station to the city.

After the Reichsbahndirektion was dissolved in 1935, the building was initially used by the Trier Gestapo office. After that, the building was initially empty. Over the decades the building has been used by many different institutions. Since 2006 it has housed a multi-generation house and the seat of the Trier public prosecutor's office.

Former Reichsbank Trier

In addition, the northern facade of the building of the former Reichsbank Trier with its neoclassical columns is located in Christophstraße. However, the main entrance to the building is at Kochstrasse 13.
