Christ the King Church

The Catholic Christ the King Church in Lauchhammer-Mitte was built from 1935 to 1936. It is a replacement building for the smaller St. Joseph's Chapel from 1908 , which was originally also located on the property on today's Wilhelm-Oberhaus-Straße. Together with St. Jakobus in Ortrand , Sorrowful Mother in Elsterwerda and St. Matthias in Hohenleipisch, it forms the parish of St. Hedwig in the deanery of Torgau ( Diocese of Magdeburg ).

history

With the beginning of industrialization in the Mückenberger Ländchen at the end of the 19th century, Catholics moved into the predominantly Protestant region. After these initially celebrated their services in private apartments, the Catholic men's association St. Josef was founded around the turn of the century , which acquired the property in Bockwitz in 1908 and built the St. Joseph's Chapel . The property was enlarged by the purchase of additional areas in the neighborhood and since the chapel proved to be too small as the community grew, Bitterfeld became the Christ King from 1935 to 1936 under the direction of the architect Johannes Reuter (1897–1975) -Kirche was built, which was consecrated in May 1936 by the auxiliary bishop Augustinus Philipp Baumann of the Archdiocese of Paderborn . The St. Joseph's Chapel immediately to the left of the new building was later demolished.

Interior

The interior of the church is characterized by a pointed barrel vault. A Pietà created by the Munich sculptor Paul Giesbert Rautzenberg has been located here since 1943 and was commissioned by the parish vicar Wilhelm Oberhaus , who was murdered in 1942 .

The church organ with 14 registers on two manuals and pedal dates from 1972. It was built by the Liebenwerda organ building company Mitteldeutscher Orgelbau A. Voigt . Before that, there was an organ made by the Jehmlich organ building company , which had since become dilapidated and was built in the year the church was rebuilt.
