The small Catholic church "Sorrowful Mother" ( Mater dolorosa ) is a listed church building in the small town of Elsterwerda in southern Brandenburg in the Elbe-Elster district . Here it is located a little north of the city center on Heinrich-Heine-Straße. Today the church forms with Christ King Lauchhammer , St. Jakobus Ortrand and St. Matthias Hohenleipisch the parish of St. Hedwig in the deanery Torgau ( Diocese of Magdeburg ).

Building description, history and equipment

The church is a massive hall with a gable roof built in the neo-baroque style . In the east of the nave there is a rectangular tower with a lantern and a tail hood . The church is dedicated to the Sorrowful Mother (Mater Dolorosa).

The church building was pastor Ferdinand Schnettler designed by the Liebenwerdaer architects built Carl Jost from Elsterwerdaer contractors Friedrich Hintze and on September 28, 1913 consecrated . The building was financially supported by the Bonifatiusverein Paderborn . Franz Schäfer became the first pastor. The rectory of the Catholic Church in the immediate vicinity was built in 1936. In the 1960s, the church was redesigned.

After renovation work had already been carried out on the outside in the previous years, renovation work was carried out in 2007 as part of a renovation measure inside the church, through which, among other things, the existing barrel vault was given profile wood cladding and the church was repainted. The gallery has been reduced and the altar slab of sandstone at the previous high altar replaced by an oak board. From the removed sandstone slab, a new ambo and a people's altar were created , which were consecrated on October 20, 2007 by the Magdeburg Bishop Gerhard Feige at the end of the renovation measures financially supported by the Bonifatiuswerk Paderborn .

Equipment (selection)

In the church there is one of a Oberammergau carved artists and consecrated on April 30, 1939 St. Joseph - Statue . The altarpiece from 1942 shows a group of Christ and John .

The altar and the ambo in the church are made of sandstone. The church is also provided with a by Moritzburger organ builder Wilhelm Rühle created organ equipped. The instrument, inaugurated in 1955 after three years of construction, has a manual and eleven stops .
