Christ at rest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Christ in the rest (also: Christ on the rest ) is a form of representation of the Ecce homo in Christian art , in which Christ is represented sitting (often as a lamenting gesture with an arm on the thigh).

This form of representation has its origin at the end of the 14th century, the earliest known representation is a sculpture attributed to Hans Witten in the Brunswick Cathedral from this time. The typological model is the portrayal of the grieving Job who laments his fate.

The motif of Christ resting is mainly used in sculpture , depictions on paintings are comparatively rare.

The patronage is borne by the churches " Herrgottsruh ".
