Christ Basilica (Outeiro)
The Christ Basilica of Outeiro ( Portuguese Basílica de Santo Cristo de Outeiro ) is a pilgrimage church in the village of Outeiro in the northern Portuguese district of Bragança .
history
The church goes back to a blood miracle on April 26, 1698, in which the image of Jesus in the then chapel of the Holy Christ sweated blood. The church has been used for church services since May 3, 1713, and was completed in 1739. This important pilgrimage site has been a national monument since 1927 and was given the title of a minor basilica on July 12, 2014 by Pope Francis .
architecture
On the plan of a cruciform church , the building is characterized by symmetry and balance of proportions. It shows a baroque style, influenced by the Manueline architecture, the main source was the church of the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos monastery . The influence of Galician and Leonic architecture is essential. The main facade is inspired by the church of the São Vicente de Fora monastery . It is characterized by a magnificent twin gate portal, a large ox-eye and two flanking bell towers.
The interior is designed in a baroque style. Of particular note are the altars with their polychrome and gilded carvings. The most important treasure are the paintings in the sacristy .
