The Evangelical Lutheran Christ Church Othmarschen is the central church in the Hamburg district of Othmarschen . It is located on Roosens Weg on the edge of a small green area near the northern entrance to the Elbtunnel and thus a little away from today's center of the districts of Othmarschen and Groß Flottbek around Waitzstraße and the Othmarschen S-Bahn station.

Building the church

The brick church was built in 1899/1900 according to designs by Albert Petersen, it was donated by Conrad Hinrich Donner on the occasion of his wife's recovery. The church building, designed in neo-Gothic forms, was to incorporate elements of English churches according to the express will of the founder and is already characterized by reform efforts in architecture around 1900. The use of tuff, lava and slate is remarkable, which distinguishes the church from many other church buildings of the same time in Hamburg. Another unusual structural feature is the connection of the church with the pastorate and the parish hall to form a group building, which shows the orientation towards British and North American models. The floor plan corresponds to the pattern of a Greek cross that was widespread at the time of construction .

In the 1950s, the church was expanded to include the community center according to plans by Jürgen Elingius . In 1969 the entire interior was renovated, an entrance porch was added on the west side and the altar was moved from the north to the east wall.

Interior

The interior has been painted light since the last renovation in 2009, which makes the windows designed by Hans Gottfried von Stockhausen particularly stand out. Only Christ as the judge of the world is shown in warm colors in the altar window. On the altar is an altar Bible that was donated with the construction of the church and an altar cross from the workshops of Taizé .

Also worth seeing is a cast of the bronze sculpture Lehrender Jesus by Ernst Barlach, which was donated to the church by Hermann Reemtsma in 1953 .

Bells

In 1950 the church received four new bells for its 50th anniversary, which are also a Hermann Reemtsma foundation .

organ

With the Beckerath organ from 1936, the church has a significant instrument with a well-known tradition in organ building. Rudolf von Beckerath designed the instrument while he was still working as a freelance consultant for organ building. It already clearly shows the sound characteristics typical of its builder. Financed and donated by the Hamburg entrepreneur family Reemtsma , it was built under Beckerath's direction by the Sauer company from Frankfurt / Oder.

An extensive overhaul in 2004 deliberately left the sound image untouched, so that the organ can be considered a testament to the history of organ building in the early 20th century. Today the organ is used regularly for concert series, its disposition is as follows:
