Christ Church

The Christ Church is a Protestant church consecrated in 1899 on Kruppstrasse in Düsseldorf - Oberbilk . Their neo-Gothic architecture is typical of sacred buildings of historicism , even if the building was changed or simplified in many parts after war damage.

history

Barely eleven years after the inauguration of the Johanneskirche , the evangelical parish in Düsseldorf was faced with the need to build more churches because of the enormous population growth. Locations in the “outskirts” of the city at that time, such as in Unterbilk and Oberbilk, made sense. In 1892 the community acquired two properties, one of them on Kruppstrasse in Oberbilk.

For both locations, two architectural competitions were held at the same time in the summer of 1893 , which were open to participants from all over Germany. For Oberbilk, the jury awarded a design by the Leipzig architect Georg Weidenbach with the first prize, which the municipality accepted for the construction.

First, however, a prayer room for 400 people was built on the property as a provisional place of worship - supplemented by a pastor's apartment - based on a design by the Düsseldorf architect Hermann vom Endt .

Construction of the Christ Church did not begin until 1896. It was created under the artistic direction of Weidenbach and the local construction management by the architect Moritz Korn , a student of Johannes Otzen . The church, completed in 1899, has a cruciform floor plan, its architecture is based in particular on models from the early Gothic period . The Düsseldorf painters Henning and Witte and Johann Albert Lüthi from Frankfurt am Main contributed to the artistic equipment .

After considerable war damage, the church was rebuilt in a simplified manner.
