Christ Church (Zieverich)

The Christ Church is a Protestant church in the Zieverich district of the city of Bergheim in the parish of Cologne-North .

Church history

The parish became independent in 1903. So it is a young community in the diaspora of the Catholic Lower Rhine. The first Protestant church in the then Jülischen area was the community in Kirchherten with its simple house church . Its first “offshoot” was the Kerpen-Bergheim vicariate in 1853 , but it did not last long. It was not until the Pfeifer & Langen sugar factory was founded in Elsdorf that there was growth and led to the founding of the Elsdorf Vicariate , which was soon renamed Elsdorf-Bergheim . For this first house of prayer for 50 people was built in Zieverich 1883, which then supported by the sugar manufacturer Eugen Langen , 1893 the property donated, 1894/95 by a neuro-manic with donations and help of the sugar manufacturer Valentin Pfeifer and Eugen Langen funded Saalkirchenbau 160 Squares with the rectory of the Hamburg architect Ernst Paul Dorn was replaced. The church was the first representative Protestant church in the Bergheim district . At that time the parish had about 200 members. With the planning, the parish became independent, but remained parochial connected with Kirchherten. Zieverich then got its own pastor's position in 1903 and thus became completely independent. The main towns of Elsdorf, Bedburg, Niederaussem, Fortuna, Quadrath-Ichendorf and Bergheim with around 1000 Protestant Christians in 1938 also belonged to the community. This church was almost completely destroyed by bombs on October 29, 1944.

The Bedburg architect Karl Sander was responsible for the new building in 1950/51 , who planned around 20 Protestant churches in the region. The inauguration took place on October 28, 1951. After structural problems, the church was expanded in 1962/63 by adding an extension to the right of the choir and building a new choir wall. Meanwhile the community had grown and the districts Bedburg - Niederaussem with the Erlöserkirche became independent in 1957 and the Petrikirche in Quadrath-Ichendorf in 1965. Since 1970 the church has been called Christ Church. The community was called Bergheim-Zieverich since 1971. After the construction of further parish centers and churches and the establishment of two new pastors, the parish has been called "Evangelical Parish Bergheim-Zieverich-Elsdorf" after its parish districts since March 1st, 1993. It has about 5900 parish members, the district of Christ Church Zieverich 3330.

Christ Church

The new building is reminiscent of the previous building. A rose window dominates the street front , and the church tower is again half integrated on the left northwest side of the nave. It has a slate top that ends with a cross . The steep gable roof is covered with tiles . The construction is open on the inside and lined with dark wood. The straight choir wall is dominated by a glass window, half-filling the wall, with the symbols of cross and dove of peace , designed by the Düsseldorf sculptor and glass artist Hilde Viering (1898–1981) in 1962 . The side windows, which are also colorful, are by the Düsseldorf artist Johanna L'Hoest (* 1937). The entrance to the organ gallery is through the side tower.

Furnishing

The church still has the traditional furniture with pews . The altar and baptismal font are made of stone.

In 2009 the previously unsuitable organ was replaced by an instrument from the 1970s from the Detlef Kleuker workshop in Bielefeld that had been completely overhauled by Willi Peter from Cologne and expanded by one register to 16 .

Bells

The two bells of the old church survived the war unscathed and found their place again in the new building.
