The Christy Brown School in Herten - Langenbochum is a special needs school sponsored by the Regional Association of Westphalia-Lippe with a special focus on "physical and motor development". It was attended by around 220 physically handicapped children and young people from the Recklinghausen district in the 2016 school year . The school is named after the Irish writer Christy Brown , who himself had a physical disability.

history

In 1980 the Christy Brown School was founded. Initially housed in a primary school in the city, the number of pupils increased from twelve to a school with its own building. Today the school has around 220 students and around 100 employees.

The student body includes children and young people with physical and motor impairments, according to the school description

  • “Just like children and adolescents whose movement problems are not obvious, they depend on help with everyday activities
  • need learning opportunities on an elementary level, the subjects of which are outside the common notions of school learning content, as do children and young people who can continue learning in the mainstream area after attending the Christy Brown School
  • and whose disabilities have arisen in different ways and affect different personality areas. "

The school includes

  • a two-tier entry level and lower level made up of heterogeneous groups
  • an intermediate level that involves a change of teachers
  • a final level that should enable the transition to professional life (first and second job market, day care center).

Different funding offers are geared to the individual needs of the students:
