List of shipping disasters
The lists of shipping disasters contain a listing of the most serious marine casualties and shipping disasters in the history of the sea and shipping in general.
Content and definition
In particular, very serious marine accidents are listed here - those with fatal consequences, or those with total loss of ship or with significant water pollution.
From the Maritime Safety Investigation Act :
"§ 1a Definitions (...)
- 2. very serious marine casualty
- a marine accident that occurs to a ship and in which the ship is completely lost, at least one person is killed or there is considerable pollution;
- 3. serious marine casualty
- a marine casualty that is not classified as a "very serious marine casualty" and in which there is in particular a fire, an explosion, a collision, a grounding, contact with a solid body, damage caused by severe weather, ice damage, a There is a crack or suspected other damage in the outer skin with one or more of the following consequences:
- a) failure of the main engines; significant damage to accommodation spaces; severe damage to the shipbuilding structures, in particular a leak in the underwater area of the outer skin, which makes the ship unfit to sail,
- b) pollution, regardless of the amount of pollutants released, or
- c) an average which requires towing or assistance from the land; "

The contemporary public perception of shipping disasters often did not depend on the actual severity of the respective disaster, but on a variety of factors for which, according to recent historical research, the concept of ' sense making ' played a prominent role.
