Chrysis bicolor is a species ofthe golden wasp family (Chrysididae). Chrysis bicolor belongs to the Chrysis succincta group.

features

The wasps have a body length of 5–8 millimeters. The head and mesosoma are mainly greenish-blue. The mesoscutum and the front edge of the pronotum are red or gold-red in the female, while in the male they are gold-red to greenish in color. The mesoscutum is usually darker in the middle of the males. The metasoma is mainly red in the female, and gold-green in the male with a greenish, bluish or black apical border. The tergite T2 often has a black dorsal spot in the female. The wings are transparent.

distribution

The species occurs in the Palearctic . In Europe, their distribution area extends from Sweden and Finland through Central Europe (France to the Baltic States and Hungary) to Spain and Italy in the south. With the exception of Jersey , the species is not represented on the British Isles . In North Africa, Chrysis bicolor occurs in Morocco . In the east, the distribution area extends to the Far East of Russia .

Way of life

Chrysis bicolor parasitizes endogeic (in mineral soils) nesting digger wasps of the genera Dinetus and Tachysphex . The following host species are mentioned: Dinetus pictus as well as Tachysphex obscuripennis and Tachysphex pompiliformis .

The golden wasps can be seen from June to the end of August. They prefer open sand biotopes and dry grasslands as habitats.

Similar species

Chrysis illigeri - is similar in color and difficult to distinguish. The distance between the lower eye orbit and the mouth is equal to the basal width of the mandibles , while in Chrysis bicolor this is a maximum of 3/4 of that. Furthermore, the stippling of the second tergite is less pronounced than in Chrysis bicolor . In addition, the metascutellum is more elevatedin profile in Chrysis bicolor .
