Chrysochir aureus is the only species of the genus Chrysochir withinthe Umberfish family (Sciaenidae). It occurs in tropical shallow coastal waters in the Indo-Pacific from southeast India via Sri Lanka to southern China . It feeds mainly on small crustaceans .

The species is fished and marketed fresh or dried and salted.

Chrysochir aureus reaches a length of up to 30 centimeters and has a slender, laterally flattened body. It is metallic blue on the top and becomes silvery towards the belly. There are darker lines on the back. The head is relatively flat and roughly triangular in shape with a pointed snout. It has a central, closely spaced pair of pores, three pores on the snout, five on the upper edge of the mouth and six on the lower jaw. The mouth is large and terminal and has one or two fangs at the tip of the upper jaw, which are visible even when the mouth is closed. The gill trap has four or five slender thorns on the upper part of the first gill arch and eight to ten slender thorns in the lower part. The lateral line organ runs through 47 to 50 scales. The dorsal fin has ten or eleven hard rays in the front part and one hard ray and 25 to 28 soft rays in the rear part. The pectoral fins have a hard ray and 17 to 19 soft rays. The pelvic fins sit just behind the pectoral fins and still in front of the dorsal fin and have a hard ray and five soft rays. The anal fin has two hard and six or seven soft rays. The caudal fin is diamond-shaped. All fins except the yellow pectoral fins are gray with orange shades.

The carrot-shaped swim bladder has 27 to 30 branched appendages at the front end.
