Chrysopilus cristatus (Syn .: C. auratus ) is a two-winged bird from the family of snipe flies (Rhagionidae).

The flies are 6 to 8 millimeters long. They are similar to Chrysopilus erythrophthalmus , but slightly smaller than this species. The cheeks are hairy black or black-brown, the legs are black-gray, knees, splints ( tibia ) and heel phalanges (metatarsus) are yellow. The black-brown border is long.

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are very common in Europe. They colonize the herbaceous and shrub layers at the edges of the forest near waterways and are moisture-loving.
